Memorial or honorary gifts can be an especially meaningful way to commemorate a loved one or celebrate a personal milestone while also benefitting MIT.

MEMORIAL GIFTS

A memorial gift to MIT is a thoughtful way to commemorate the life of a loved one who as passed away. Gifts of any size can be directed to an existing fund, or you can establish a named fund for a particular purpose.

By Credit Card: Make a memorial gift to MIT with a credit card using MIT's secure online giving website at: giving.mit.edu/form.

After selecting your gift's designation, check the box that says "Make this gift in honor or in memory of someone". Then check the "In memory of" box and fill in the name and relationship to MIT of the person in whose memory the gift is made. If you would like MIT to notify the family or another individual of your gift, check the "Notify someone of this gift" box at the bottom and follow the prompts to enter in contact information of the recipient(s) if you have it.

By Check: Make a memorial gift to MIT with a check by mailing it to:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
P. O. Box 412926
Boston, MA 02241-2926
Attention: Memorial Gifts Office

Questions may be directed to our office at: memorial-gifts-office@mit.edu.

Donate to an existing fund in memory of a loved one simply by using the Give Now button or search function in the upper right corner of this page to choose a designation. Check the "in memory of" box when prompted. Some examples of designations:

  • Unrestricted: Gifts to this fund will be gratefully used by the Institute to help MIT meet its most pressing needs, as well as the current general needs of the Institute.
  • MIT Memorial Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship Fund: Gifts to this fund will provide scholarship support for deserving MIT students with financial need. This endowed memorial fund pools gifts from a number of donors to provide scholarship support for MIT undergraduates. Contributions made to this fund are amplified by the power of aggregated gifts to maximize the aid provided to students.

Once gifts made to this fund in memory of your loved one reach $1,000, their name will be added to the fund web biography site. If those accumulated gifts reach $10,000, we can include a short biography. Because it is an endowed fund, and principal is never spent, if gifts made in memory of your loved one reach the threshold for establishing an endowed scholarship fund (currently $100,000), those gifts can be redirected to establish a named, endowed scholarship fund.

  • Designated Gifts: You can also direct a memorial gift to a designation of your choosing like a department, an existing MIT program, research area, or fund. If you are seeking areas to support at MIT, browse the Explore section of the MIT Giving site to find where your gift can make the greatest impact. If you have something specific in mind, type a keyword in the search area at the top of this page, or click the Give Now button and use the prompts given on that page. If you still have questions, please contact us, and we will be happy to assist you.
